Yet in the wake of her US Open triumph late on Sunday night it is difficult to deny that she is the greatest female athlete of her immediate generation - in her own sport of tennis or any other, for that matter. The 6-2, 2-6, 7-5 victory over Victoria Azarenka means that there is a 13-year span to her wins in Grand Slams, which now run comfortably into three separate decades with the first having been registered in 1999.
